A Visit to the Homosassa Learning Center

Way back, probably early last year, I started reading in the local paper about efforts to change the unused Fire Department into something the community needs.  Eventually the idea was to turn it into a Learning Center.  Right across the street from the Homosassa Elementary School, I thought that it was an excellent idea.

A lot of bright minds, hard workers, and local organizations put it together and now both students and adults have access to tutors, classes, books, and computers.

Last week Terry and I took a tour of the Homosassa Learning Center.  Joanne Bartell, the director of the Learning Center, had invited us plus we had snacks for the students.  We had three of our grandkids visiting and thought they would want to see the Learning center, too.

Peachicks are raised in the portable crib and Joanne explained the difference between a peacock, peahen and peachick. I know, those kids look scared, but they were really interested.

She also explained how the hydrophonic gardening works so the grandkids could understand.

Curious about the wishing well, when they found out it was for donations, they headed to Grandpa.

The Homosassa Learning Center has been open for about 8 months.  It offers programs for adults and children including tutoring, GED prep and job skills, computer lab & Internet access, plus a course in sustainable gardening. Education services are free.

The next hydrophonic gardening class is Thursday, June 25th, from 6 to 8 PM.  Call 352-628-9333 to sign up.

The Learning Center is located at 10950 W. Yulee Drive in Old Homosassa.

This is such a great program.  But to continue, volunteers and donations are needed.
