Friday Meanderings

Cornhole Bag

We had a cornhole tournament in our backyard last weekend.  Just for some of our community group friends that also live in the ‘hood.  It was fun. fun. fun.

We’ve had many of these tournaments with family and friends and we just assumed everyone knew what cornhole was.

Not so.

I had a few questions about exactly what was cornhole and how exactly could that be a group sport.

Here’s one of the emails from our newest neighbor:

Before Karen and I accepted I had to google “cornhole tournament”! Where I came from “cornhole” has a completely different meaning! So, now being enlightened, we shall be happy to attend and look forward to a fun afternoon.

We’re pretty serious about Cornhole.  Blind draw. Single elimination. Two boards going.

Two newbees to the sport WON! Proof that anyone can play cornhole!

Kendall
I didn’t take any photos during our First Annual Homosassa ‘Hood tournament, but here’s Kendall playing last year at one of our family tournaments. Everyone has fun playing cornhole.

Terry finished the update on our deck.  I’ll post about that next week.  IT LOOKS GREAT!  And the view is even better, if that’s possible.

As our snowbird friends leave and the summer heat and humidity creeps in, the local entertainment starts to wan.

This weekend there’s a Pirate Invasion and Raft Race in Crystal River.  10 am to 10 pm.  $5.00 to get in.

I applaud Crystal River for this effort and trying to keep the fun going through the summer. Hopefully we can get there.  Got other family stuff early in the day.

I’m off to Minneapolis next Friday to pick up 5-year-old granddaughter Piper.  She’ll be with us for a couple weeks. We’ll be at the Wildlife Park almost every day.  Plus visiting those mermaids at Weeki-Wachee.

PIper told me last year that she really wanted to be a mermaid.  I said “But I’ll miss you”. And she said “I’ll swim down and visit you a lot”  From the Missouri River to the Homosassa River. Too cute.

Have a great weekend!

Friday Meanderings

It’s Friday again!

Yippee!

Time to party!

Right?

But I want to talk about insects.  In particular, YELLOW FLIES!

OH MY GOD!

I have never NEVER had so much pain from an insect bite.

Neither the real estate agents nor Coastal Living mention YELLOW FLIES or NO-SEE-UMS or ZIKA MOSQUITOS.

Okay, we don’t have zika. (YET!)

But those damn yellow flies are the worst.  They sneak up on me and blood from their bites is flowing before I realize it and the damage is done.  The itching doesn’t start right away.  It takes awhile…..

The very first time I experienced yellow flies, I woke up in the middle of the night after a day working in the yard and was itching like a crazy person. I thought Maggie had fleas.  I was so miserable. I gave Maggie a bath. At 2 am. Poor Maggie.  Poor me.

Now I now what all that itching is about.

Yellow flies.

Fortunately, they are only here for about two months.  But by the time they leave, it’s too freaking hot to go outside!

Yeah, those realtors and life style magazines neglect to tell you about that!

But,

with all that,

Still love living here in Perfect.

So what’s going on?

The weekend of May 21st, there’s a bunch of parties in Crystal River.

Raft Race.

Pirate Invasion.

Sounds like fun, fun, fun, fun.

And then the Cobia tournament is on June 11th and 12th at MacRae’s in Old Homosassa.

This is HUGE fun.  We like to go down and watch the boats head out in the wee hours.  And have a bloody Mary or two while watching.  It’s a tradition!

Oh yeah. Some people actually like to fish on those boats.

Highly over-rated.  Go for the BLOODY MARYS!

And the Old Homosassa Heritage Council will have a tent there.  We will have our new 2016 T-SHIRTS available for a $20 donation.  It will be way cool.

We will also have raffle tickets for a golf outing at Twisted Oaks.  A VERY NICE golf course.

And best of all.

drum roll right here…..

We will have raffle tickets for a GOLF CART!!!!!!

So cool.  Doug and Kim at Homosassa Golf Karts have once again come through with a golf cart for our raffle.

And now that Old Homosassa is an official Golf Cart Community (Almost like the Villages but totally NOT), you probably really need to buy some raffle tickets.

FIVE BUCKS!

How much fun are we having?

If we could just get rid of those freaking yellow flies.

Have a great weekend!

squirrelie

You know how I’m always going on about those damn squirrels?

Well, on this website, we have a banjo-playing damn squirrel!

Perfect.

If you don’t want to actually go to the website, squirrelie was trying out many instruments and gave up the banjo almost immediately.  Only shows that squirrels do not always make good decisions.

Damn Squirrel.

Last night, Terry and I met a friend at the NEW Papa Joe’s in Brooksville.  You may remember it burnt down a couple years ago and a new beautiful and modern restaurant rose from the ashes.

I didn’t take any photos on this visit.

Papa Joe's
This is a photo of the bar that I took last year when I had lunch there. Looks the same.

Dinner was WONDERFUL!  I had eggplant parmigiana.  Took most of it home with me.  So Good.  If you ever get a chance to eat there–take it! GO!  It’s outside of Brooksville, almost to I-75.  Take 50 and turn on Fl-41.  Right there. Yum!

So what’s going on?

Can you believe that Sunday is MAY?????

The Homosassa Civic Club is having their monthly meeting on Monday.  Potluck starts at 6 pm.  We are doing a Cinco de Mayo theme.  Wear your sombrero!  Also honoring five of our local students with scholarships.

Put on your calendar for June 6th, Senator Charlie Dean will be at the Civic Club for a “meet and greet” at 5 pm. Rumours have it that our new Senator Simpson will also be there.

What else?

The weather’s great!  Get out there and enjoy it!

Have a great weekend!
