This ‘n That

Just a few updates.

First wanted to give out a shout-out to Michelle….

I handed out cucumbers to my friends as souvenirs from our trip to North Dakota.  Mine went into salads.  Michelle turned hers into pickles. I stopped by one day to drop a kid off or pick one up and she was charring red peppers on the top of her shiny gas range.  I was like, “who does that?”  The answer is Michelle.  She shows up with jars of homemade lo-cal strawberry and blueberry jams. (We return our clean jars to her with the hopes that they’ll be refilled). And while she’s doing the creating she’s also taking pictures and then writes for this blog.  And she has a 14-year-old son and a husband that works out of the house.  Busy busy busy!

My friend Donna sent me a link to a fun blog.  Bluebird Flies The blog is about a young couple and their 7-year-old daughter that sold everything and are spending a year in Europe.  I think that is so cool!  I would never have been that brave!  And the husband’s mother, Sherry, happens to be a friend of ours!  Even more cool!

Thought I’d spread the word that we have a new bicycle shop in Crystal River, Surreys, Sycles, & Stuff.  It’s at the former Lenco Bicycle shop on 19, just north of the Home Depot and across from the airport.  Fred Crawford is the owner and just re-opened the store.  Stop by and say hi!

And going along with bicycles, the 19th Annual Rails to Trails Bike Ride is Sunday, October 6th.  Terry and I are registered to ride, first time for us!  September 14th is the last day to register and be guaranteed a commemorative shirt.  But it’s not too late, you can register online.

Scalloping season is almost over but there’s still plenty to do on the Homosassa River.  The 31st Annual River Raft Race is September 21st and some of the local venues are holding an International Ethnic Festival from September 23 thru October 20.

Okay, that’s it.  There should be a DIY up tomorrow!

In the Garden

Mandevilla, IN the Garden
The mandevilla have bloomed strong all summer.

Nightblooming Jasmine
Love taking the dog out for her evening walk just because the scent of the nightblooming jasmine is exquisite.
Blue Hydrangea
One blue hydrangea amidst all the pink ones.
Maggie in the garden
Maggie is not happy with me. I feed some stale bread to the fish and she was really miffed. She went out several times just to stand on the dock and check for floating bread. Just want to say, Maggie hates bread–unless I feed it to the fish.

The plumeria didn’t do well this year.  I have nine plants and these are the only two that bloomed.

Rose, In the Garden
The roses are coming back since the weather has cooled a wee bit.
Bromeliad, In the Garden
This variety of bromeliad is starting to bloom. Michelle gave me these many years ago, they’ve multiplied, and I’ve transplanted them around several trees.
Banana tree, in the garden
I took this picture of the flower on the banana tree yesterday morning. I went out in the late afternoon to get a better photo and the yellow flowers were gone. Did the ants eat them? Squirrels?

Traveling with the Top Down–Dade City

It was positively autumn-like this weekend.  Just kidding.  But it was only 72 degrees when we got up Saturday morning–that’s nice.  My range for going out in the convertible is 80 – 90 degrees.  Any cooler, I’ve gotta wear a jacket.  Any warmer–forget about it!  So it was time for our first “Top Down” adventure for Fall 2013!  Off we went to Dade City!

We like to take side roads on our drives.  Blowing down an interstate or the parkway at 70 mph is just not all that much fun in a convertible.  So we took 98 to Brooksville to Spring Lake Hwy and ended up in Dade City.

Dade City is the county seat of Pasco County.  That explains this big old building…

The Dade City Courthouse

I’ve been to Dade City more than a few times.  For me it’s all about its cute little shops, antique stores, and delicious lunch places.  All things that might not be on Terry’s fun things to do list.  But Saturday was the first Cruise In for the season!  Yippee!  Both of us were happy.

We hit a few shops and then it was time for lunch.  We went to the City Market Bistro.  I’ve been to Lunch on Limoges and Kafe Kokopelli but this was a new one for me.  Yum!

I have to admit that the whole eating experience is very important to me.  I don’t just want delicious food, but give me some fun décor.  And this place was very cool.  Plus I had one of the best portabella sandwiches I ever!  They also served beer and wine but then I would have had to take a nap so I skipped the adult beverages.

After lunch we went to some more antique shops and I bought a milk glass creamer and some cobalt canisters.  I really loved them until I got them home.  There was scotch tape holding the lids to the jars.  When I removed the tape when I got home, I discovered chips on two of the lids.  I just felt that was really dishonest to put the tape on the cracks.  Really?  Most reputable antique places point out those types of things.  They are usually totally upfront with problems.  But I learned a lesson, in the future I will be more careful on checking out the merchandise before I make a purchase.

Then on to the “Cruise In”.

This Cadillac has something in common with me….

It was a fun day.  Great to be back in the convertible.  The Cruise In is the 1st Saturday of each month from 2 – 7 now that our crisp Fall weather is back!  Put it on your calendar!
