Squirrel Awareness Month

Who knew? If I hadn’t seen it on Instagram I would be clueless!

So we must celebrate! And be aware of squirrels.

Here are squirrels playing banjo…

squirrelie

Okay the top one is totally photo shopped (I didn’t do it) and the other is one I made–in celebration of Squirrel Awareness Month! I thought it was appropriate.

The rest of the month, I will be posting squirrel snaps. Just so you will be aware of squirrels!

Good News. I’m off of crutches/walker. Bad News. I’m having some difficulty. Walking has been a challenge. I think my muscles have atrophied. I guess I won’t be running any marathons this year.

Stuff going on in Homosassa

Next golf cart drive-in movie is on October 24th at the Homosassa Civic Club. It’s part of the club’s sponsored Halloween party. The movie is Hocus Pocus. There will be socially-distanced tables set up for the kids to do crafts. Also a scavenger hunt and costume contest. Pretty sure that’s for the kids too. But I’m not running this event so I’m not sure. Happy to say that Jessica MacRae is in charge and is getting help from the Crystal River Key Club and the Junior ROTC. The kids need the community hours! Jessica is making costume face masks for the volunteers and they will be required to wear them. This is a safe event. Adults should arrive with candy to hand out to the kids.

The county Parks and Rec are also showing Hocus Pocus at their drive in movie at the Homosassa Park on October 30th. Also a costume contest. The civic club was asked to provide a judge and Connie Wright will be fulfilling that role. I might tag along cause it sounds like fun.

The civic club is also planning the Children’s Christmas Outreach for 60 needy children. You can “buy” an ornament at the civic club. Starting November 1st you can get one at the Old Mill Tavern. The ornaments are $25, $50, or $100. There will be other locations as things come together. The money goes toward gifts for children in our community that would otherwise go without. There will also be a shopping caravan, a gift wrapping party, and a children’s Christmas party with Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus. Not sure how that will work out yet. More to come.

And finally…..the civic club is planning an event in the spring. April 17th. Drumroll please. The very popular Mullet Toss returns to OLD HOMOSASSA! This was an annual event held by the Old Mill Tavern to raise funds for local children groups until a few years ago. It became a bureaucratic hassle for them and they gave up on holding it a few years ago. The club attempted to pull it together last year but didn’t have enough time. This year we have some energetic volunteers that are excited to host the party. And money raised will go to the youth in our community because that is the main mission of the Homosassa Civic Club.

It’s October!

Time to start planning the bewitching hour!

Upcoming Halloween events:

Homosassa Civic Club Halloween for the Kids. October 24, 4 to 8 pm. Asking adults with golf carts to come to the civic club and pass out treats. There will be 24 of those crazy long handled grabbers to safely hand out treats to the kids. The Key Club kids will be helping out Jessica MacRae with crafts. Two kids per table. The Key Club kids will have on a face mask at all time. Also music and a movie.

The Florida Cracker Monkey Bar is also having a Halloween party and asking adults to come with their golf cart and treats. I don’t have any more info other than it is on October 29 and we signed up to be one of the carts.

And the Homosassa Baptist Church is having a truck and treat event on October 31. Once again, no info.

Then, because the weather is so wonderful this weekend, the civic club is having a golf cart movie night on Saturday, October 3. Starts at dusk. Bring your drinks and snacks. The movie is Foot Loose. This was originally planned in June but it RAINED that evening. Then I fell and Terry had to spend all his energy in making me better. Plus it was just too hot all summer. This weekend’s event was a complete surprise to me. I was in front of the learning center and the sign said “movie night”. What! Fun times are back. If you don’t have a golf cart, drive your car, park in the “triangle” which is across the street from the civic club, bring your chair and set up.

Okay. I fell. 12 weeks ago yesterday I had surgery. Which means I can now walk without crutches. Waiting until Monday for my DR appointment for his approval. But I was out pulling weeds today. (with my crutches) So many weeds! Yeah for cooler temps!

Planning for Christmas at the civic club already. Told Ms. Harmon, the guidance counselor at the Homosassa Elementary School that we can take on 60 needy kids. We spend $100 on each child and buy gifts from their wish list. The club really depends on the community and the members to help out with this event. Especially since we will not be having a festival this year. There will be Christmas Trees with ornaments at the Old Mill, the American Legion Post 166, and at the civic club. Each ornament will have a dollar amount on it. You pick an ornament and give it to the bartender at the Old Mill and American Legion or Rhonda at the civic club with the money. Then we will ask for volunteers to do the shopping. More volunteers for the wrapping. And again, volunteers to hand out the gifts to the grown ups in charge of these children.

We also have a Christmas party for the community kids. It will be on December 19th. Mr. and Mrs. Claus are already signed up but we are not quite sure how we will do social-distancing. Great gifts are handed out to all the kids that attend.

Planning a Christmas concert on the front porch of our future Old Homosassa Heritage Museum. Do not have a date yet but this will be amazing!

The Old Homosassa Learning Center has a few more classes coming up. Nadeene started Zumba back up on Wednesdays at 6:15 pm. Belly Dancing is starting back up on Tuesdays on November 17th. Yoga continues on Mondays and Thursdays at 9 am. After-school enrichment be begin for kids in January after the holidays.

Yikes! Stuff is happening!

DOG OF THE WEEK

KairiĀ

This little girl is a rescue. She’s a Aussie Doodle and very timid. Still a puppy. I don’t know all of her back story but she was rescued from a puppy mill. She will need lots of love which she is definitely getting. Her new mama and sisters brought her to meet me at the learning center. Adorable but very scared. Hoping I can be her friend.

The LAST Friday of September

Peeps. Not a lot going on here in Old Homosassa.

Had some meetings.

Went to the park a few nights.

Jessica MacRae is planning a Halloween Party at the Homosassa Civic Club. For the kids. October 24th from 4 – 8. All you locals–part of the event is “Trunk or Treat”. Bring your treats to give out to the kids. There will be music, crafts, and a movie. Fun for all. Masks and all the appropriate protective gear will be worn. We will be having an event every month since we are not having the after-school enrichment program until January. Or at least until I can walk on two legs and deal with children running around. With face masks.

I have 10 days stuck on crutches/walker. Putting weight on that left knee just to test it for the real walk. Yikes. The weather is wonderful and I just want to be out in my yard with my flowers…and weeds.

Three months. Disabled. I’m kinda sorry I didn’t get the handicapped sticker for the Jeep so I could park a little bit closer to Publix. But, in reality. Terry is doing the driving and shopping. I just sit in the car.

Anyhow….
