Happy Official Holiday Day

Homosassa Fireworks Festival

So today is the day that all the offices, government, and banks are closed. Cause Independence Day is on SUNDAY! So what are you doing on the most patriotic day of the year? Not watching fireworks I bet!

We bought a new flag cause our previous one was kind of getting worn. The new flag is flying very beautifully in front of our home.

I’m kinda staying in and trying to NOT watch the news. Not very successfully, of course.

But. I am more boring than I used to be. I have nothing much clever to say.

But. It appears that face masks have turned into a huge political battle. After going to DC last week, I am wearing a face mask. 100% of the people we saw on the streets of DC, Maryland, and Virginia wore face coverings. And they are not spiking. Well, not as badly as Florida….

But. Scalloping started on Wednesday. Kinda boring to have it start in the middle of the week. Haven’t noticed a whole lot of boat trailers looking for parking spots. That will probably start TODAY! Yippee. Terry and I WILL be on our bikes checking out the mayhem. And taking pics. Next week maybe I won’t be quite so boring!

But. Even though I said Yippee. I am not enthused with this time of the year. We are trying so hard to save the Homosassa River. But the “Blue Water” is over run. Boats from one end to the over. It’s a major party. Scallop shells, cans, trash, and pee-pee are in the water. Boaters can walk between all the vessels. I have no solutions for this situation. All the groups that we belong to continue to battle. Besides all the tourists, there is so much governmental Bureaucratic bungling.

Heavy sigh.

Okay. On to good news.

The Homosassa Baptist Church Youth Group will be parking trucks with trailers and any other vehicle that needs a spot starting Saturday at the Homosassa Civic Club. I’m guessing $10 a spot. These kids finance their Bible camp with the funds they collect. Well, that’s what they used to use the funds for. Is there still camp? No matter. I’m sure that they will use it for good causes! It’s a great Church and the leaders are amazing. We lend them our golf cart to drive to the boat ramp and back.

I am so boring. I don’t even have a DOG OF THE WEEK! Cause I’ve been staying away from the masses. Okay. Gotta admit. On our walk yesterday we had Zack the Jack Russell come out to say HI! and a sweet little pooch that usually ignores us came over to get some cuddles. Anytime I have a dog come seek me out is a GOOD day! But I didn’t have my camera with me. Not even my iPhone!

I hope everyone has a great holiday. And as always, stay safe!

Project 365
One of my favorite Fireworks photos ever. That’s Piper. My granddaughter in North Dakota. Breaks my heart that I can’t spend time with her. We usually spend a few weeks every summer there. She and her sister are very cool. And of course, her parents are very cool, too. (cant’have cool kids if you aren’t cool parents) Miss them all so much.

Friday Meanderings

I didn’t post on my sewing blog (DesignsbyKTGreen.com) this week because we went on a little vacation.

Off to visit our DC family.

family
Andrew, Terry, Me, Jes, Pam, and Murphy

Last time we visited was in March–the week before the quarantine and at that time were very worried about the corona virus since we were flying. This time we drove.

A whole different set of concerns. Like staying in a hotel? Where to eat? Where are the restrooms?

But we made it through. Gone a little more than a week. Wiped EVERYTHING down with disinfecting wipes. Lots of hand washing and Purell. Wore our face masks. Social Distanced.

Still feel kind of like we could have been contaminated during the drive!

But it was wonderful seeing the family. The weather was great and we spent lots of time walking, working in the house, and enjoying the back yard.

Home. Probably not going on another vacation for awhile. Sad to say.

Opened the Old Homosassa Learning Center this week. This was also done with lots of trepidation. I had been texted by most of the instructors that they wanted to get started again but I was very concerned about a spike in the virus. We are all working together to make it work. I went to yoga yesterday. Michele, the instructor, has asked everyone to wear face masks. She also only wants 8 people in the class. While our main room is quite large, 8 mats socially distanced fills up the space. She decided to cancel her other class, Body Sculpting, because she doesn’t think it can be done with face masks. I concur!

It was nice getting back to yoga. I’ve been working out regularly but being in a class is a whole different situation. (I actually have to do the whole class!I can’t get up and check my texts!) And it wasn’t that difficult to do yoga with the face mask on.

The Zumba and Belly Dance instructors are not asking for face masks. It would be pretty much impossible to do either with the safety coverings. They are starting up after July 4th and if things don’t work out, we will quickly change the schedule.

The Homosassa Ukers also start back up on July 1st. How do we sing with face masks? This may or may not happen! Our Sew Cool! coach wants to wait until the end of July. But I miss my stitching buddies!

Anyhow. Had no trouble driving up and back. But this sign greeted us as soon as we crossed the Florida border on our way home!

It took us about 30 minutes to get through that “check point”. Not sure how it all works but when we got to the security official at our “Florida” lane he asked “where you coming from?” DC. Sent us through. (In hind sight I probably should have said Georgia!)

There was another conga line that headed in a different direction. Guessing that they were from New York, New Jersey, or Connecticut. There was no way to get back out to I-10 and go north so I’m guessing they were temperature checked and told to quarantine for two weeks.

Which is amusing since it is Florida that is spiking.

Covid-19 cases have almost doubled in our little county since Florida started opening back up. 219 yesterday according to the local paper. While that’s not a lot, it is still almost DOUBLED! Old Homosassa is having the ONLY fireworks display in the county this weekend. It’s a ton of fun. Great music. Food. An amazing display for such a tiny spot in the world.

I won’t be there.

Many of my friends say it’s a “hoax”. Only the flu. Not an issue. Do not wear face masks.

Sorry. I get a vaccine every year because I do NOT want the flu. (People DIE from the flu!) I’m wearing my face mask. I will not be in the crowd on Saturday. Nor in any crowds during the upcoming scallop season. I might miss out on some fun. But…..

Okay.

Here’s the

Dog of the Week

Murphy again! Besides being absolutely adorable, he’s the only dog I have seen in the past week.

Murphy and Me! I might have been trying to give the cutie a kiss and he wanted no part of it!

We had such a great visit with Jessica, Andrew, Pam, and Murphy. I miss my North Dakota kids SO MUCH! We have talked about making that drive. We did every year after our sweet poochie pie Maggie couldn’t fly anymore. That’s one of the many reasons I didn’t run for the Board of Commissioners for the Homosassa Special Water District this year. Between the monthly civic club meetings and the HSWD meetings, it didn’t leave a lot of time to drive.

Anyhow. I am still holding out hope that I can get to North Dakota.

Have a great weekend. Stay safe.

Friday Meanderings

Went to the county boat ramp in Old Homosassa last Saturday. It’s tradition that we go there to watch the start of the annual Cobia tournament. Used to start at 7 am with the boats jamming the river and ready to have their numbers called so they could quickly get to their hot fishing spot.

This year the tournament was moved to Crump’s Landing. Which is directly on the other side of the river.

cobia tournament

But they didn’t wait to start at 7 am. Most were already gone by that time.

There was still a line at the boat ramp, though.

cobia tournament

There were actually two tournaments going on. So there were lots of boats in the water. And a deputy!

It had rained the entire night but everything was drying up pretty well by the afternoon. We had planned on having our drive in movie night at the Homosassa Civic Club. Started raining again about 4 pm so it was canceled. Can’t have it next weekend because that is the Fireworks Show and the following weekend is July 4th. Maybe we should have these movies after the rainy season!

The Old Homosassa Learning Center is opening back up on June 22nd. Everyone has to sign a waiver and we only 10 per session.

learning center schedule

I haven’t heard when the Zumba teacher wants to start back up. I’ll let you know! Sewing will probably start towards the end of July.

That’s it for this week!

Have a safe weekend!
