Happy Last Friday before Autumn!

O M G! Autumn starts on Monday! And gotta say that today we have had super weather. Like, I went out to the back yard to water my plants and my glasses did not steam up.

So, I got local stuff to talk about. If you are reading, in say……North Dakota….you might not really be into it. But…

Citrus County Board of County Commissioners are considering putting a $10 charge for using four boat ramps in the county. The money is supposed to go to upgrading current boat ramps, parking, and creating new boat ramps.

Lordy…..we need all of that. But…..

Those boat ramps should not be in Old Homosassa. Our river is already distressed. It can’t take much more. And parking? If you live here or boat here or party here….there is no place to put parking.

So…..concerned citizens started a petition. And lots of people have been signing it. And it caught the ear of one of the commissioners. Jeff Kinnard. He is not even “our” commissioner. But he is the sponsor of the idea.

And he was alerted to our concerns last Wednesday and came to the civic club on Sunday to meet with the concerned citizens. And I want to add that it was his birthday. And he was scheduled to have lunch with his mother. (Gotta love anyone that schedules a birthday lunch with his mom!)

Terry opened the meeting with pretty much the same message we give for every meeting..there will be no arguing or fighting and there will be respect. There was some pissing and moaning at the meeting. But it didn’t get out of hand.

And Commissioner Kinnard has called Terry at least three times to discuss further and get contact info.

And we have potholes filled in. Not just at the boat ramp, but at a lot of the secondary roads.

We were out walking yesterday morning and the mother of a friend stopped us on her way to work and asked if we had anything to do with getting the giant car eating pothole filled on her street. Well, kinda, maybe, but not really. That would be Commissioner Kinnard that actually listened to us and wanted to make our community better!

Have to say I love where I live and love that we can change things with a lot of help of a bunch of concerned citizens. I am still against the boat ramp fee at this point. I think that it is necessary but there a lot of details to work out before it happens And I also know that none of the money will come to Old Homosassa. Seriously people. There is no available property to turn into parking and our river does not need another boat ramp.

The learning center is booming. Ten kids and six volunteers for our little Homosassa Ukers. Six years old through twelve. They are learning their chords with the goal of learning “Lava” so they can play it at the Homosassa Arts, Crafts, and Seafood Festival. The art session also has ten kids and they will be displaying some of their work at the festival, too. Four kids in the piano lessons with a waiting list. (We can only have four kids because each gets a 1/2 hour lesson–that’s all the time we have!)

Have a great weekend!

Happy Friday the 13th!

It’s Friday the 13th. And we have another bunch of bad weather on the way. Seems appropriate.

I forgot to post last week.

And I had so much to say. Guess I really didn’t or I would have posted!

So what has been keeping me busy? The Old Homosassa Learning Center started the 2019-2020 After-School Enrichment Program last week. Usually we keep registration open for at least a month but we are completely full! Art, ukulele, guitar, and piano. There’s also a kid coming to the Sew Cool! Workshop.

The adult programs are also doing well. Yoga, Zumba, Body Scultping, Ukulele, and the Sew Cool! Workshop. Something for just about everyone!

I’ve been trying to design a new cross-body tote. I put a new tutorial together and passed it on to a friend so she could test it and she couldn’t understand it. At the Sew Cool! Workshop we sat together and went over the directions. Step by step. I think I left out a page! Or at least a picture! I don’t think that pattern will be released anytime soon!

Exciting news from the Old Homosassa Heritage Council. The water tower project is just about finished. The landscaping is complete with the exception of pavers that will be installed soon. But we will be moving onto another project and still need to raise money. Our next event will be in February. I’ll be posting details in the future!

The Festival Committee of the Homosassa Civic Club is busy getting ready for the Homosassa Arts, Crafts, and Seafood Festival on November 9-10. We have new volunteers that have new ideas. This will be the best festival ever!

I’m continuing with helping the Girl Scout working towards her Gold Award. It’s been a poor year for scallops so she hasn’t been able to put anymore scallop shells in the crab traps off of our dock. And scallop season is just about over. She has been attending meetings–like yesterday’s Homosassa River Alliance–to learn all about the local waters.

I think that’s about it.

Have a great weekend.

Friday Meaderings

And just like that, it’s Labor Day weekend.

Have to put my white pants away.

Have to make sure we have water, gas, beer, food.

Cause, just like that, we have a hurricane on the way. (I should have stayed a couple more weeks in North Dakota!!!!)

Cause, it’s Labor Day and that’s one of our traditions in the state of Florida.

Rumor has it, our local gas stations are out of gasoline and at the grocery store the shelves of water are bare.

That’s probably not quite true because rumors seem to take on a life of their own. During Hurricane Irma when our governor suggested that the entire state evacuate, the stores and gas stations were very quickly emptied as the hoards from the southern counties fled. And the same story went out. No food. No gas. No water. Have to say, Publix was quick to deliver and refill the shelves in our little local store. And gas was eventually available. But living here for most of my adult life, I’m smart enough to keep our vehicles on full and water comes out of our faucets!!!!! As long as I have lived here in Old Homosassa, we have not lost our water supply. Could happen. (But I know the people that run the water district. Not happening!) Just in case, I just fill every container we have and stick it in the freezer. Now, if we run out of beer that could be an issue!

On to another subject….

The Old Homosassa Learning Center is scheduled to start its after-school enrichment program next week. Art on Mondays, Ukulele and Guitar on Wednesdays and Piano on Thursdays. All sessions are full! And we have great volunteers. Tutoring is also available on request. All thanks to great people in our community! And we keep it free thanks to all of our friends that go to the Homosassa Arts, Crafts, and Seafood Festival!

Here’s a pic from yesterday!
