I caught this guy from the corner of my eye and thought it was a baby hummingbird! No it’s a Nessus Sphinx Moth! I don’t see these very often and am always really excited when they show up.Probably the same nessus sphinx moth, it just moved to a plumbago.Sulphur on PentaTwo Eastern Black Swallowtails. I’ll give the butterflies a 10 for the synchronized flying. I don’t know how you get these pictures. They are amazing!
Thanks Allie! I have a very butterfly-friendly yard. I can see them through my kitchen window and always have my camera with the zoom lens attached sitting on the bar so if I see anything of interest, I’m out the door!
I was at Lowes the other day and a lady was asking about ‘baby hummingbirds’, as I was buying a dwarf firebush (labeled a hummingbird bush??). I said, “well, yes there are babies, but what you’re probably seeing is a kind of moth….” poor girl – she was not entirely happy to hear about the Sphinx Moth. I think they’re great though, and they do look like baby hummingbirds!

Love your pics. I have seen hummingbird bees up here but nothing that colorful.

Many years ago the pest control guy told me that he got called out to a house to get rid of flying alligators. They were dragonflies.
