Friday Meanderings

taking the oath

Well, it’s Friday again.

And you want to know what’s going in Homosassa, right?  NO?  Oh come on, you know you wouldn’t be here if you didn’t!

My big project has been the Learning Center.  We are tutoring.  Monday through Wednesday.  3:30 – 5:30.

Got a lot of volunteers.  Need more.  If you are in the area, we would love to have you. But we will background check you! I’ve done it.  It’s painless!

Think about it.  We can change the face of Homosassa.  The kid that I’m tutoring is in the 3rd grade and readily told me that his teacher said he only reads at the first grade level.

Sheesh.  That is so wrong.  But I remember having a young son and I was told that he was way behind in reading. And we went to the library.  And read a lot of books. And he learned how to read. And is quite a wonderful person. That can read.  And uses really big words.

So.  My new friend and I will be reading.  I’m thinking comic books to start with because he really likes superheros. Right?  Then we will get into bigger stories.  He is really quite an adorable child that wants to learn and fit in.

We’ve got other kids showing up at the Learning Center that think it’s fun time.  Not learning time.

Nope.  It’s the “Learning Center”. If you don’t want to learn.  You can just go home.

I don’t need any teenage attitude.  But.  Having said that.  There’s a few other volunteers that just say she needs attention.  Okay with me.

I’m sticking with the 3rd grader!

But after some intense learning, we are sneaking some fun in.  Think “Project Runway”. There will be some sewing machines and totes of fabric stuff on the premises.

And we have guitars!  What???? A kind person donated four guitars.   I play the banjo so I have no clue on guitars but I do have a snark and tried to tune them.  Strings were breaking. Some parts were missing. Since I love the music all of those will be fixed.  And tuned.  Already talked to my friends at StrumHollow in Spring Hill to get some guidance on repair. All we need is a teacher. For the kids and adults!    Anyone????

Besides all that. I took my oath on Monday.  I’m now an official commissioner.  My name will soon be on the door.

This was a good week but there might be bad stuff coming.

And that’s how it is!

taking the oath
Not a great snap, but a great moment in my life!

Just another day in Perfect

So I planned on putting a post up today BUT keep getting distracted.

My son called last night.

Mom, do you see what they are saying about Terry on FB?

Yes, yes, we do.

Oh, the wonders of social media.

Someone named Grace L. Cooley said that “the man I just met there had a red nose and cheeks and the smell of alcoholic on his breath. ” We looked at her photo on FB and Terry said, I’d remember her!  Really young person.  Everyone is like over 60 that he usually talks to.  And we remember the young ones because we want them to join the civic club!  And that description? Really?  Was she talking to W. C. Fields?

Okay, let’s forget all that bad stuff and remember the good.  Last week was really busy.  Starting on the Friday before…..

We went to a legislative session with Representative Dr. Ralph Masullo and Senator Wilton Simpson.  They are supporting the “Access to the River” committee and the working waterfront park on the river and there should be some money.  The committee has been working on this for two years.  This might be the year that we actually get our park!

Yippee!!!

Then on Monday evening, Terry was sworn in as president of the Homosassa Civic Club.

Terry

Another Yippee!!!!!

Tuesday morning I attended the County Commission meeting about RESTORE funds.  The county is all about building the park.  They are calling it the “Sunset Park”. Same park that the “Access to the River” commitee has been working on.  But we’ve changed the name to “Old Homosassa Heritage Park”.  Doesn’t matter.  Just fund it.  And they are putting RESTORE funds towards it.  How great is that?

There were also discussions about another park at “Sportmans Cove”.  We are now calling that the “Old Homosassa Water Tower Park”.  Because it’s the property behind the water tower.  Duh!  Name it.  And they will fund it.  That’s our new theory. But seriously, how great would that be?

Finally–the county and the state are noticing OLD HOMOSASSA!

And then there were more meetings.  And more meetings. The second week of the month has meetings morning, noon, and night.

Oh yeah, and lots of nasty posts and comments on FB.

Oh yeah, articles in the newspaper.

Here’s the second article of last week’s series.

2017_01_13article

We also made the Citrus Chronicle’s week in review.

The Learning Center is OPEN.  Never closed. We have volunteers that will be there Monday through Wednesday.  3:30 – 5:30.  More programs coming.

And we will not respond to those nasty comments on social media. What a waste of time.

And there are a lot of questions about missing tech equipment from the Learning Center that the Civic Club paid for.  We have the receipts.  Lots of receipts.  7 laptops.  Surveillance equipment. Projectors.

That’s not a social media threat.  That’s a FACT.

Like I already said, the Learning Center is open.  We are tutoring the kids from the Homosassa Elementary School.  They need to pass the “test” to keep the A rating of the school.  I have mixed emotions about that whole testing thing, but for now, we will help the school make that rating.

Because that’s what we do.

Friday Meanderings

Okay, if you are one of my local readers, get your calendars out!

Big meeting in Inverness today.  Our “Access to the River” project is on the agenda for the Citrus County Legislative Delegation.  3:00.  We are getting closer to getting a public park on the river! The “Homosassa River Restoration Project” will be represented, too.  We’ve decided to wear blue to show our unity and the delegates will know who we are!

Saturday and Sunday there is a craft show at the Villages.  Supposed to be a good show.  We’ll be there to check out the talent if the weather is good!

Speaking of weather, it’s been lovely here.  I even mowed the yard today! Who does that in January? (Okay, I actually just mulched up the leaves since there hasn’t been any yard growth) We’re supposed to be getting some cold weather today but nothing like the rest of the country.

And back to the calendar….a really exciting meeting will be on Monday night at 7 pm at the Homosassa Civic Club.  Yes, it’s the monthly meeting of HCC.  Terry will be sworn in as president and some of our disgruntled members (yeah, there’s maybe 5 of them) have hinted that controversy will ensue!  Fun. Fun. Fun.

Tuesday morning at 9 am there will be a Board of County Commissioner meeting regarding the funding of the boat ramp on the barge canal.  At least one of our new commissioners is questioning putting the boat ramp there.  The funding and the boat ramp could be moved to the Homosassa River.  Whether you are for or against this idea, you should attend the meeting.

There’s more meetings.  But you don’t really want to go to those!

Have a great weekend!  And stay warm!

Kathy
