FRIDAY!

I GOTTA WRITE SOMETHING CLEVER!

Sheesh.  Not feeling very clever.

But I’ll try anyhow, let’s talk about Spring in the waters of Mason Creek.

Had an alligator a couple weeks ago.  Only time we get them is in the Spring when they are very confused. Because it’s mating season.

Four in 13 years.

Told our “weekend” neighbors since their little granddaughter was playing in the canal.   And they laughed.  And that small child continued playing in the canal. (Besides having a predator in the water, do they know that we are not on a sewage system and 75% of the homes do not have updated septic tanks?)

And yesterday I snapped these photos of manatees.

I like to call it Manatee Love.  Think Marvin Gaye.  But no music.

The public perception of a manatee is this slow moving water mammal munching on sea grass.

Not during Manatee Love season.  They make some waves!

Anyhow….

I’m headed to Minneapolis today.  Picking up granddaughter Piper.  Be prepared for my daily photo in Project 365 to be a 5-year-old.

Important stuff coming up.

Memorial Day.  1:00.  At the Old Homosassa Veterans Memorial.  We will be there.  If you want to chat, we are the slightly older tall couple with the very pretty 5-year-old granddaughter.  And we might try to sell you a raffle ticket for a golf cart.  To restore the Old Homosassa Water Tower.

“Meet and Greet” at the Homosassa Civic Club at 5 pm on June 6.  Meet your Florida senators, Dean and Simpson.  I’m on the committee.  Committee of three.  I’ll be there.  I’m a hostess.  Terry is a bartender. Fun.

Cobia and Big Fish Tournament on June 11 – 12.  Oh, yeah.  Me and the husband and adorable granddaughter will be there.

July 9th, Mullet toss at Old Mill Tavern.  All money goes to the Homosassa Elementary School.  Sheesh.  Are you tired of hearing opportunities to meet us?

Speaking of Old Mill Tavern.  Had lunch there yesterday.  Didn’t take any photos because we’ve been there a thousand times.  And then I checked my blog and realized that I have NEVER even dedicated a post about them. The food is good. The servers are great.  Drinks are excellent. The owners, John and Shelly, support our community.  Terry recommends the wings. You can just order the drummies.  And the handmade French Fries are wonderful.

Okay.

Have a great weekend.

A Better View

A Better View

This was the view from my sofa.

Nice but those balusters just got in the way.

And now it’s like this!

Okay.  Pretend that gate’s not there.

Terry wanted to take it off but I’m a worrier.  Terry added it to keep Maggie on the deck before we had the yard fenced in. Now that she’s 16 1/2, Maggie rarely goes out into the yard unless we are with her.  She’s quite happy to sleep on the couch all day.

But, I’m a worrier.  Saw an alligator in the canal last week.  Fourth one in 13 years.  The gate will stay on until Maggie goes to puppy heaven.  One less thing for me to obsess about!

We’ve talked about replacing the balusters with horizontal wire.  We’ve seen several homes with decks that have been built like that over the past few years. Although it’s expensive it’s totally worth it to get the view.  But what was the kicker for me was that it looked like a two person job.  Although I’m all about DIY, I’m not strong enough to do the work that needs done on the deck nor do I like working with power tools.  (I just know I’ll loose a thumb or two.)

And then, during his extensive research, Terry came across this wire railing on Home Depot’s website.

Vertical Stainless-Steel Cable Railing Kit for 36 in. High Railings

He would have to add the bottom rail, but that was easy in the grand scheme of things. (Especially because I didn’t have to do it.) Plus not nearly as pricey.

And if we got rid of those balusters, I’d never have to paint them again! More joy and happiness!

So Terry ordered a bunch of the railing kits.  Took the balusters off. Added the bottom rail then the railing kit.   Painted.  Etc. And he was able to do all the work with no help.  Oh wait, I did help him measure.

Same view–but better!

Here’s the deck in February.

And one from last summer.

Nice but this is better!

Oh look, we are coming back on the boat and there is Maggie in the back yard and the gate isn’t closed. That geriatric pooch does go out in the yard.

And a couple more snaps…

Huge difference.  Love it! And we never have to paint those balusters again!

Cornhole Bag

We had a cornhole tournament in our backyard last weekend.  Just for some of our community group friends that also live in the ‘hood.  It was fun. fun. fun.

We’ve had many of these tournaments with family and friends and we just assumed everyone knew what cornhole was.

Not so.

I had a few questions about exactly what was cornhole and how exactly could that be a group sport.

Here’s one of the emails from our newest neighbor:

Before Karen and I accepted I had to google “cornhole tournament”! Where I came from “cornhole” has a completely different meaning! So, now being enlightened, we shall be happy to attend and look forward to a fun afternoon.

We’re pretty serious about Cornhole.  Blind draw. Single elimination. Two boards going.

Two newbees to the sport WON! Proof that anyone can play cornhole!

Kendall
I didn’t take any photos during our First Annual Homosassa ‘Hood tournament, but here’s Kendall playing last year at one of our family tournaments. Everyone has fun playing cornhole.

Terry finished the update on our deck.  I’ll post about that next week.  IT LOOKS GREAT!  And the view is even better, if that’s possible.

As our snowbird friends leave and the summer heat and humidity creeps in, the local entertainment starts to wan.

This weekend there’s a Pirate Invasion and Raft Race in Crystal River.  10 am to 10 pm.  $5.00 to get in.

I applaud Crystal River for this effort and trying to keep the fun going through the summer. Hopefully we can get there.  Got other family stuff early in the day.

I’m off to Minneapolis next Friday to pick up 5-year-old granddaughter Piper.  She’ll be with us for a couple weeks. We’ll be at the Wildlife Park almost every day.  Plus visiting those mermaids at Weeki-Wachee.

PIper told me last year that she really wanted to be a mermaid.  I said “But I’ll miss you”. And she said “I’ll swim down and visit you a lot”  From the Missouri River to the Homosassa River. Too cute.

Have a great weekend!
