Dining Local — Coyote Cafe

Last month when Terry was working me to death on the Seafood Festival…….

Just kidding, Terry was the worker, along with a lot of other friends and neighbors.

I did the website. The FB posts. Some whining.

That’s my job!

But there was a morning that I went down to help him get things organized at the Civic Club office. I was probably gathering raffle tickets to distribute. And about noon I was starving and I said that he had to take me someplace to eat and it had to be close. Cause I was hungry and next step was hangry. Don’t want to go there.

So we went to the very closest place, one we had never been to before, Coyote Café.

Wow! Such a great lunch. Still can’t figure out why we hadn’t stopped in before that. I had the special and Terry had a ham and cheese sandwich. (That’s the typical Terry lunch)

And we’ve been back two more times, together. Terry did sneak out while he was doing manual labor during the festival setup and have lunch there with a friend.

We stopped by yesterday so I could get pics and feature the café.

I ordered the special, which is what I usually do.

Terry and I shared the soup. He took the last bit of bacon and said that he was saving me from eating it. (cause I’m on a perpetual diet)

It was so good. Looking at that photo makes me want to go back and get more.

The portions are very generous. I should have taken a snap of how much ham is on that sandwich. Terry was very happy.

The décor is a Southwestern motif. Little unusual for Old Homosassa but nice.

I’ve said many times in past posts, I’m not a reporter, just an observer. If I was a reporter, I would have asked for everyone’s names. First and Last. But, I think this is Stephanie and Dana. Ladies, if I’m wrong, comment or email me and I will fix it! One or the other always serves us and they are very pleasant and efficient. Soup and drinks are served as soon as we ask for them. Can’t get quicker than that!

I would highly recommend you stop by Coyote Café. Have lunch and sit awhile and chat. That’s the kind of place that Coyote Café is!

Open on Wednesday through Sunday from 11 am to 3 pm. No credit cards but there is an ATM machine right by the register. The café is in the back of River Safari’s on Yulee Drive. Can’t miss their sign in the front. There’s parking in the back of the building.

Shopping Local — Watsons Art Gallery

Through the month of December I’m featuring some of our local places. Because, I know it’s hard to believe, there’s more in Old Homosassa than just the Freezer!

I’m starting with Watsons Art Gallery in Old Homosassa. It’s right next to Marlin Marine. Can’t miss it. Look for all of the colorful art in front of the building.

The Watsons Art Gallery is our most recent shop that has opened in Homosassa. Even being here for less than two years, Gil and Wendy Watson have made a huge impact on our community. When the Old Homosassa Heritage Council decided to raise funds with t-shirts and I asked Gil if he would do the artwork, he said “OF COURSE!” And he gave OHHC the original artwork for our future museum!

The artist that was first selected to design the artwork for the Homosassa Arts, Crafts, and Seafood Festival backed out. I don’t know why. It just happened. The t-shirt committee chairperson went to Gil and asked if he would do the artwork. Gil didn’t hesitate. He not only designed the t-shirts, he sold them in the store and had posters made. During the festival, Gil and Wendy both worked in the t-shirt booth. The shirts were so popular they were almost sold out by noon on the first day of the festival. Since then, Gil has ordered and is selling a smaller version of the poster for $15. Another run of the t-shirts is planned. The Watsons donated the original artwork to the Homosassa Learning Center for a fund-raising raffle that was held at the Seafood Festival.

The Watsons also hold art classes for the children in our community. Free.

Besides Gil and Wendy’s art in the gallery, artwork is available from other local artists.

Gil and Wendy are also holding “Paint an Original Carving” art classes. The most recent one was of wood carved pelicans. Very cool. Gil does the carving, you do the painting.

The next class will be Saturday, Dec. 12th from 10 to 1 and the subject will be a sea turtle that can be used as a decorative wall hanging or turned into a functional piece. $50 per class, everything provided except the wine. You gotta bring that! If you are interested in a Wednesday evening class, just give Gil and Wendy a call.

Friday Meanderings

It’s Friday!

And I should have something witty or at least sarcastic to say, right?

Too tired for either right now. The Festival sucked all the energy out of my body.

Hoping I get some of it back next week!

The Old Homosassa Heritage Council held the big golf cart raffle. Golf Cart Doug and four members from OHHC delivered the cart to Marilyn LaTorre in Sugarmill Woods on Monday.

Speaking of golf carts, there is a meeting today at 3:00 at the Lecanto Government Center to discuss turning Old Homosassa into a golf cart community. After years of being a “golf cart community”, our residents have been harassed over the last year by one deputy who has decided that golf carts are BAD. We have worked very hard to get a big turnout at the meeting. Since Old Homosassa isn’t incorporated, our only elected official is our county commissioner, Ron Kitchen. Not sure if he has spent a whole lot of time down here and understands our unique village.

Hey, if the Freezer could ignore all of the rules and be allowed to be a restaurant and bar without any legal standing perhaps there is a precedent there?

Personally, I’m off to Renninger’s ANTIQUE EXTRAVANGANZA today. This is one of the few traditions that MUST NOT be messed with. Michelle, Connie and I are off in the early hours to join all of those women in their mini vans and SUVs to do treasure hunting. Terry will have to represent me at the golf cart meeting.

Went to the Homosassa River Alliance Meeting yesterday. Gerry Mulligan, publisher of the Citrus Chronicle and numerous other small newspapers across the state, was our special speaker. He made many interesting points but the main one that if we wanted the water issues fixed we had to present the solution. That only makes sense.

I found it sad that there were only 33 people at the meeting. It was advertised in the Citrus Chronicle every day for the past few weeks plus all the local organizations sent emails out to their members. As far as I could tell, only members of the River Alliance were there, besides a couple of people that were running for office. I thought we would have more representatives from our other local groups there to support our community.

So, what’s going on??

Oh actually, Yankeetown is having a seafood festival this weekend and Ozello is having an art show next weekend. Hope to get to both of them.

There’s a flag disposal ceremony on Saturday at the Homosassa Civic Club by American Legion 166. Starts at 3:00. If you have an American flag that’s seen better days, this is the only way to dispose of it. Seriously. There are laws!
