Magnetic Chalkboard

The curse of the stainless steel refrigerator–no where to put magnets!  How am I to express myself? Well, I’ve found a way!

Chalkboard

Saw instructions on a blog months ago to make a magnetic chalkboard that I thought would be perfect.  Click here for the tutorial:  DIY Magnetic Chalkboard

I found a really bad print in a nice frame at a local thrift store for $8.00.  Tossed the print and spray painted the frame pewter gray.  We picked up a 24″ x 36″ piece of galvanized sheet metal in the plumbing department at Home Depot. Terry cut the sheet metal to the size of the cardboard backing that was with the frame.

I found some directions on the blogosphere on how to make my own chalk board paint but decided making the blackboard would be enough of a challenge!  So I bought a small can of Rustoleum Blackboard paint at Home Depot. The magnetic chalkboard tutorial calls for spray blackboard paint but I’ve used that before and it took a couple cans for a wee board.  After agonizing over which color to get, I decided on black. I’m boring like that sometimes. But I like black.  And now I have enough paint leftover to do a whole wall.

Then I just followed the instructions on the blackboard paint can–used a foam roller and primered the sheet metal with Zinzeer Bullseye 1-2-3 primer.  Because that’s the kind of primer I had in my totally organized garage. Followed up with two coats of blackboard paint at the specified intervals.  Let it sit three days and then conditioned it with chalk.

Now I’m having lots of fun putting clever phrases on it. Because I need to be clever and have somewhere to put all that cleverness.

And it really is magnetic.  Now I have a place to put all those refrigerator magnets that have been hiding in storage for a few years.

Riley suggested this phrase! Using the sheet metal worked. You can see a couple of magnets here.

Some fun websites

No pics today. Not even a fitness post.  I’m just sharing some fun websites. But isn’t laughter the best medicine?

First, Is Ryan Gosling cuter than a puppy?  I didn’t realize that I was in love with Ryan Gosling until I watched Crazy Stupid Love.  Jes watched it with me and gave me this website. (Actually she gave me all of these websites) Love it.  Only disappointment is that they don’t update it anymore.  Hey, if they need puppy pics, I’ll be happy to send then a few. They just have to provide the Ryan Gosling photos. http://ryangoslingvspuppy.tumblr.com/

Then there is the highly topical Suri website–Suri’s Burnbook.  This one is updated regularly and is quite amusing.  Why does Suri hate so much?  http://surisburnbook.tumblr.com/

Hipster puppies used to be one of my favorite blogs but they decided to write a book and quit updating. Now it’s one big ad for the BOOK. Which I might have bought if they had just kept updating! But just go back to previous posts to see cute pooches with hipster attitude. Although I’m protesting the book, here’s the website: http://hipsterpuppies.tumblr.com/page/2

And here’s another hipster website that is all about selling the book.  Perhaps I’m just jealous that I haven’t come up with a book!  Anyhow, the only reason I think this is funny is that thIs is exactly how we all dressed when I was young and way cool. Of course, I’m still young and way cool–but not that young. Confused? Me too!http://dadsaretheoriginalhipster.tumblr.com/

Flamingos

I think Flamingos are really cool.  Especially because it is actually correct to spell the plural as Flamingos, Flamingoes, or Flamingo.  Really, I looked it up.

I love love love this print from Jan Beckman’s 20×200.

You can click here to check it out:  Flamingo No. 4 by Sharon Montrose. If I had a kid’s room to decorate, I would definitely buy this one.  She has several other prints that I love with monkeys and donkeys and all kinds of adorable animals.  Each and all would look sweet in a child’s room.

It sort of inspired the flamingo “art” I made for our powder room.

Here’s the photograph I started with:

And here’s a whole bunch of flamingos at the Homosassa Wildlife Park looking hoity-toity with their beaks up in the air.

One last picture of flamingos.  Saw these one afternoon across the canal.  Since I knew that flamingos do not naturally live this far north, I sent out the picture to several friends.  One correctly identified the species as “Plasticus Flamingus”.  Giggle.
