I haven’t posted here for most of July. Cause I’ve been kind of down and out. Took a spill, messed up my knee, had to have surgery. That was my July.
Wondering what malady August will bring? Oh yeah, a tropical storm is on its way!
July wasn’t all bad. The Homosassa Civic Club finally completed the purchase of the “Old Homosassa Heritage Park and Working Waterfront”. After five years of ups and downs, the “Access to the River” committee finally came across the Stan Mayfield Working Waterfront Grant, applied and received it. The park was purchased on July 7th. Have to give a shout out to Senator Wilton Simpson for directing us to the Florida Community Trust and the grant. In case you didn’t see the article in the paper or on FB, the park is located at the former Locklar property. Shelly’s Seafood, Wild Sassa, and numerous boat slips are located there. All will remain. The property will be a working waterfront in “perpetuity”.
The committee is now making plans for improvements. None of the boat slips have electric or water so getting that installed is a priority. Plus a clean up day is planned to get the property into better shape. A long term goal is to get the property off of the three septic tanks and onto the new sewage system that is being installed in Old Homosassa. Eventually the 80 year old cracker house on the property will be a museum. How cool is that?
Over the past five years we have witnessed a lot of changes in Old Homosassa. We officially became a legal golf cart community. The water tower is back to being a proud symbol of the heritage of our community. We have beautiful wide sidewalks from Old Homosassa all the way to US 19. (Eventually there will be sidewalks on 19, too.) Florida Cracker is upgrading Riverside. Crumps Landing is hopping on the other side of the river. MacRae’s has a food trailer, Wild Sassa is a busy weekend place and Two Pops is our favorite deli. NautiTime Seafood n Wing Shak has moved into the old hotdog place and is having a soft opening tomorrow. And finally we have “Access to the River” park. Things are good.
And back to my personal dilemma, besides being stuck with a walker for the next two months (because older people do better with walkers than crutches), I am sentenced to a life time of supportive shoes. So sneakers and dresses (because I can’t get shorts over my splint) are my new fashion statement. Getting down the steps is scary but I am out and about now.
Maybe I’ll see you!
Have a great weekend!
Kathy
