Friday Meanderings

Happy Day after Galentine’s Day!

Happy Friday!

And Happy Day Before the “Toga for the Tower” party.

Speaking of the tower. A group of volunteers installed some temporary lighting around the base of the Old Homosassa Water Tower.

Old Homosassa Water Tower
February 11, 2019, My night pictures never turn out well. Could be because I don’t know what I’m doing nor do I bother to learn. Anyhow, the water tower looks like a little like a glowing spaceship!

I was not one of those volunteers. They had originally planned on CLIMBING the tower with rock climbing gear and installing the lights. Then when they actually got there and stood under the tower, they sad “nah, let’s get professionals”. They put the lights on the ground. We do have some smart people in our group!

Went to a Homosassa River Alliance meeting last night. Commissioner Ron Kitchen was the speaker. It was interesting. Citrus County will start charging $10 to use the county boat ramps. The commissioner was asked a lot of questions about that. And of course the parking issues. There was some discussion about Crumps Landing. Seems that the partners running that party place ask for forgiveness rather than permission. They cut a bunch of trees down which is a big NO in this part of the county.

The sidewalks continue along Yulee Drive. Some concrete has been poured. They are putting them together here and there rather than starting at one end and going to the other. I am assuming that there is a grand master plan.

Peace Quilt
February 6, 2019, my latest quilt. “Peace”. It’s little–a wall hanging.

And on reflection….

I’ve been trying to be laid back the last couple of weeks. Maybe even since the beginning of the New Year. Reassessing my life. Figuring out what I really want to do and don’t want to do.

Looking at my priorities.

And came to the conclusion, I still want to do all the things. And everything is number one priority.

And so I continue.

February 14, 2019 Not my quilt block. Another Cathy in the Sew Cool! Workshop designed this and hand embroidered it. She is SO talented! By the way, there are 3 K/Cathy’s in the group of about a dozen women!

And one more thought for this Friday….

while I was waiting to greet the piano students from the school a man that I only see occasionally said to me, I don’t know if you are a loyal Democrat or a loyal Republican, but the Democrats are ruining the country…..

and whether I am a loyal Democrat or a loyal Republican, I don’t think that’s the way to start a conversation.

Let’s replace some words….I don’t know if you are a loyal dog lover or a loyal cat lover, but cats are giving the world of animals a bad name. Or. I don’t know if you are a loyal unicorn lover or a loyal dragon lover but unicorns are destroying the kingdom. How would a conversation started out like that continue?

I am a loyal American and I vote. In every election since I was 18 years old.

Be Kind. Volunteer to help your community. Be sensitive to other people’s opinions. Respect their view point. You don’t have to agree. Make your world a little tiny bit better.

That’s what I should have said to him. But I just stood there in stunned silence.

And now I have to go. Because I haven’t quite finished my toga for the party!

Have a great weekend!

Friday Meanderings

Happy first day of February and super bowl weekend!

First. The big news. Captain William Toney is holding a seminar at the Homosassa Civic Club.

Back in May 2017, Captain Toney held the same seminar in the Old Homosassa Learning Center. The civic club board was new at this and concerned that we would not have a good turnout.

HA!

It was standing room only and the AC units could not keep up with the masses of people. It was SO hot in there. But no one left and people were massed outside the doors just to catch a word or two. Captain Toney was very gracious and talked for over an hour and took questions from the audience.

This time the event will be held in the Homosassa Civic Club’s main building which can hold at least a hundred people. And it’s February so it will more likely be cold than hot and humid. But if you plan on attending and getting a seat, you may want to come a little early.

Next Subject.

I have had so many people inquire as to what’s going with the construction on Yulee Drive.

SIDEWALKS!

I first posted about the sidewalks in Homosassa way back in July of 2014. I heard about them when I went to a “Meet and Greet” with Commissioner J.J. Kenney. I believe that there were six people at the political event. I didn’t know any of the people at that time. But I know them all now! Iris and Bill Rose. Bill Garvin. Jim Bitter. Terry and I. The commissioner told us we were getting sidewalks so the local residents could walk or ride bikes to the Homosassa Library. Iris Rose pointed out that there are no sidewalks on the busy street, Groover Cleveland Blvd. where the library is. I thought that was amusing.

The sidewalks again came up at a Town Hall meeting at the Homosassa Library on July 31, 2014. A sidewalk design would be made in Fall of 2015 and construction could maybe possibly almost assuredly start in 2016. Ha!

J.J. Kenney was soundly defeated by Ron Kitchen but the story continued.

February 2015 the new 60% plans came out and the county was planning to cut down seven of our beautiful oak trees that form the canopy over Yulee Drive. That’s when Terry and I kinda sorta became activists. Through this blog, going to meetings, and hanging out in a few bars, we let everyone–along with the county commissioners, county adminstrator and county transportation people–know that cutting trees down was not acceptable.

The 90% plans came out in May 2015 and the sidewalk was going around the trees. Victory.

And now, finally, after almost 5 years, the sidewalks are going in!!!!! And the trees have been spared!

I should have taken pics of the sidewalk construction but it’s been a crazy week. I didn’t even do a pic a day. So I’m going to present you with four snaps of one day!

Those kids are the Homosassa Junior Ukers. They are beyond adorable. Miss Anita is teaching them to play chords, pick notes, and how to read music. She is amazing. The kids usually act like they aren’t playing attention but they all get up and play solos and can write their notes on the board. I love it!

Alright that’s it for this week!

Have a great weekend!

January 23, 2019, I’m okay with perfect moments but not so perfect pics! This young lady is VERY shy. She has been making fidget mats for Alzheimer patients. Here she is taking a stack of fabric from the donations to the learning center. 25 more mats to go to get her Gold Star from the Girl Scouts. So happy we can help her hit that goal!
