Old Homosassa Veterans Day Ceremony

Here in little Old Homosassa, we have a beautiful Veterans Memorial.  Right on Yulee Drive.  I can’t remember when it was built, but it wasn’t that long ago.  I was living here.  But that’s when I was living my hermit life.  No volunteering back then.  Yes, the good old days.

While Veterans Day is actually the 11th, the vendors start rolling into Old Homosassa that morning for the Homosassa Arts, Crafts, and Seafood Festival.  The organizers wisely moved the ceremony to Saturday, the 5th.  It was really a nice event.

Terry belongs to the veterans group that puts the event together.  He and a few other volunteers get the podium and chairs for the audience out of the civic club and then put the road blocks in place.  Other members put together the agenda.

Anyone in Citrus County that is a veteran can have a marker here.  If a purple heart veteran, the marker is free.

Shirley and Terry
That’s Terry and his mom Shirley.  She just moved to Sunflower Springs, an assisted living facility in Homosassa, a few weeks ago. Their bus brought her to the ceremony.  By the way, she just turned 92!
marker
They just inscribed this marker for Terry last week.  Guess we are staying in Homosassa for awhile!
Sophie Noel
There were several speakers. That’s Sophie Noel singing. the National Anthem. Back at the Memorial Day service granddaughter Piper was here and was mesmerized by Sophie and her singing.
Old Homosassa
There was a pretty big audience for little Old Homosassa.
Homosassa Elementary Chorus.
The highlight was the Homosassa Elementary Chorus. They sang their hearts out. So cute.
flyer
After their performance they handed out flyers that they had colored to all of the veterans. This is the one they gave Terry.
flags
Then they put flags on the memorial.  If you want to add a flag, they will be available at the Old Homosassa Veterans Memorial booth.
taps
The ceremony closed with Taps.

It was a lovely and stirring event on a beautiful autumn morning.

Friday Meanderings

And the beat goes on….

My apologies.

I thought I’d get to put some “photo of the day” here all week from Project 365 but it didn’t happen.  My life isn’t my own.  Just spent 2 hours on the phone with a reporter.  And that’s the way every day is. Perhaps not a reporter but some kind of flux.

Except not really.

We are trying to make a difference but perhaps we are WAY OVER OUR HEADS!

Election

Homosassa Civic Club turmoil

Homosassa Arts, Crafts, and Seafood Festival

Tent City in Old Homosassa

Along with my typical every day disarray.

Reporter says the article will be in the paper on Friday.

Could be ugly.

But we will go on.

Karma.  Will. Bite. Some. Ass.

Something fun I did get to do this week is go to Crystal River and get a tour of the Kings Bay Restoration Project by Gator Dredging.  They are cleaning up the canals.  Have several more years before it’s done but they are making a difference.

The tour was requested by the “Access to the River” Committee.  We need to get this done on the Homosassa River but it takes a lot of money.  Crystal River has a lot of rich donars and a lot of funding from the state.

Here’s some photos in no particular order.2016_11_01swiftmudsm 2016_11_01safetyfirstsm 2016_11_01lyngbyasm 2016_11_01kingsbayrestorationproject1sm 2016_11_01groupphoto2sm 2016_11_01groupphoto1sm 2016_11_01dredge2sm 2016_11_01dredge1sm 2016_11_01demo2sm 2016_11_01demo1sm

So. Are you thinking.  All those old people.  What can they do?

Good People doing Good Things.  Put that in your calendar or diary or whatever you mark stuff down in.

We still got at least 20 years.  We will do A LOT!

It was a really great tour.  And then several us went to Crackers to have dinner. Because I am all about fun!

I got a Grouper Reuben.  No photo but it had sauerkraut on it.  (in case you don’t know, some places use coleslaw–what??? but I still eat them.  Cause I still love fish and I still love a reuben and I gained 3POUNDS from that bit of late night dining!)

This weekend is jammed packed with festivals!  The Blues and BBQ will be at the Homosassa Civic Club festival grounds.  Stone Crab Jam is in Crystal River.  Inverness is having a fine arts event.  So much to do!

Next week is the Homosassa Arts, Crafts, and Seafood Festival.  Nothing else is going on anywhere in the county.  Or perhaps anywhere in the state.  Be there!  Not too late to volunteer!

Have a great weekend!

Kathy

Friday Meanderings

Went to a Town Hall Meeting.

And it was great.

town hall meeting

Does anyone ever say that about anything political?????

County Commissioner Ron Kitchen called the meeting.  This is the third one he has held.  And we’ve been to all three.

townhallmeeting2

We’ve also been to two or three County Commission meetings.  Plus did a presentation at the TDC (Tourist Development Committee) which he is the head of.

Oh…..I should add that Ron Kitchen has come to at least two of our “Access to the River” meetings.

I am so impressed with Commissioner Kitchen.  I might not agree with everything he says but he listens to us and treats EVERY question with respect.  I’ve emailed him a few times and he has always answered.

He starts his meetings on time and ends them exactly at that ending minute.  I LOVE THAT!

Weird. Right?  This is politics!!!!!!

townhallmeeting3
In this pic I’m not sure what everyone is reaching for….Bags? Keys? Guns?

It was a great great meeting.

We are going to the Suitcase Party tonight. That is going to be so much fun.  We’ve got a designated driver.  Okay.  We liked him a lot before we found out that he doesn’t drink!

But now he’s got bonus points!

All the money goes to the Boys and Girls Club of Citrus County.

There might be photos on Monday.

Or maybe not.  Depends on how much fun everyone has!

Have a great weekend!
