First Friday of Summer 2019!

Another hot hot hot week in Homosassa! But no rain! (And no my plants are very thirsty)

We have a gator in our canal. It’s a small one. Normally I wouldn’t be too concerned but it’s not afraid of me. I was standing on the seawall and it swam right up to me. Not good. Someone is feeding it. Which means that small dogs and cats are in danger! Maybe even grandkids. One of the neighbors has already contacted the gator people and has a trap all set up. Good bye little Gator!

Next up, according to the Citrus Chronicle there is a Sidewalk Celebration at the Sugar Mill Ruins Historic State Park on Thursday, July 11th at 9 am. Open to the public. No RSVP is needed to attend. What??? Nothing about who is holding this ceremony nor who will be there. I think I need to be there. No RSVP needed! (And who would we RSVP? And how many people even know what RSVP means?)

We did ride the sidewalk last week all the way to BlueBird Springs road. Pretty cool. I’ve seen a lot of people using the sidewalks. Then I’ve seen people continue to walk and ride their bikes right on Yulee. Guess they like the thrill of possibly being hit by one of those huge mirrors hanging off the side of the trucks pulling boats!

Sooooo…..

Next Up!

Homosassa’s Fireworks were held last Saturday. It’s always held before the 4th of July. Usually the weekend before. Then Inverness has theirs on the 3rd and Crystal River has theirs on the 4th. But this was TWO weeks before the 4th. A lot of locals didn’t have a clue. Terry and I went down on the golf cart about an hour before the fireworks started just to see what we could see. We missed the pie eating contest and the red white and blue beer belly contest but there was still fun happening!

Ruth got 3rd in the Poker Run! Go go Ruth!

These three desperadoes posed for me! That’s DJ, Vivian, and Sean. They were three of my favorite after-school students in 2018. Miss you guys. (And seriously, these are really cute kids!)

So what are you doing on this hot hot hot weekend? I had planned on going to the Citrus Pride event at the Crystal River Mall but my grandson’s baseball team is playing for the state championship so I’m headed out to watch them win! Yeah, he’s 8. Should be fun!

Have a great time where ever you go!

Friday, Again!

And I don’t have much to report!

It quit raining for a moment! Yay!

Found an odd caterpillar in our pool. Yes. Floating along on a ball. How it got into the screened enclosure or got on the ball is a mystery. Terry rescued it and set it free. I looked it up and it is an Echo Moth caterpillar. It likes coonties which I used to have until the guy that was helping me last year in the yard dug them all up. Thought they were weeds. Back to doing my own gardening again.

In the following picture, the girl doing the split in the middle of the street is my granddaughter Addison. My Tampa daughter-in-law and her daughters were in LA for a convention. They went to Hollywood and Addison recognized a famous dance photographer and asked for a selfie. She got her selfie and more! I started following him on Instagram and he seems to specialize in taking photos when traffic is stopped at a red light. Jordan Matter.

Now that the rain has stopped for a day or two I’ll be out and about snapping more pics!

Next week!

It’s Friday!

And another rainy weekend!

Some pics from a moment that it wasn’t raining…

My yard is definitely loving the rain. All the flowers are “lush”. As are the weeds because it hasn’t stopped raining long enough to pull them.

Piper and I went to see the latest Godzilla movie right after it was released. And you ask how was it? It was Godzilla. It was big. Lots of campy looking monsters. Or Titans as they are now called. Only disappointment was that there were no Mothra ladies singing to raise her from her slumbers. I have been a Godzilla fan since my youth and my poor children sat through many an afternoon watching old black and white movies with me. “Mothra……” Had to introduce my granddaughter to the tradition. In 3D, no less. Go Go Godzilla.

I’ve been “organizing” the Old Homosassa Learning Center for a couple of years now. I don’t run it. Or teach. (I do volunteer) I organize. I reach out to the community and say…..What do you want? We now have yoga, body sculpting, and Zumba. Two sessions a week for each class. 5 bucks a class which goes to the instructor. Ukulele and sewing programs–both free. Also have a great after-school enrichment program for kids from the area and a very robust summer camp. Everything for the kids is no charge.

The learning center was formerly a fire station. We have painted the floors numerous times. Where the fire engines sat, the paint does not stick. And the floors always looked dirty.

After all of these successful programs, I finally convinced the board and the members of the civic club that it was time to invest some money into the building.

NEW FLOORS!

One final note, The Save the Homosassa River Alliance had a meeting last night at the learning center. Two members of DEP spoke.

DEP

I’m guessing these guys are used to getting stupid irrelevant questions at their speaking engagements. And they answered pretty well. Considering that DEP and the local water district and FWC and every other state or county organization duties overlap and it’s a bit difficult to figure out which agency to go to.

But I found it quite amazing, that after two years of a powerful campaign by the Homosassa River Alliance to stop people from dumping their scallop shells in the “Blue Water” of the Homosassa River, these guys were clueless about the effort. The first time they had seen one of the brochures. Had no idea that there were mounds of scallop shells covering the bottom of that area and stopping the grasses from growing because sunshine can not get beyond the shells.

Off the soapbox….

Have a great weekend!
